Today was Max's surgery day. He thought it was pretty cool we woke him up and snuck him out of the house when it was still 'night' out. He was excited and confident, until the nurse called him back. He was very reluctant, but with some coaxing, bribing, and a little liquid versed, he was back to be cooperative! He picked out a model car building set as his 'prize' from the nurses which Matt and I decided was not for anyone without a master's degree in engineering, so we ditched that and now in the morning I will be on the hunt for a replacement.
Max in his "special surgery jammies"
From the time we left Max, to the time we were back at his bedside was only 45 minutes. Dr. Wayman told us that surgery went very well. Max had a lot of fluid in his ears (and it's been in there for a long time) so he wanted to start him on a course of antibiotic ear drops. He also said that Max's adenoids were :"Ginormous" We are glad we got all this done in one shot. Tubes, Tonsils, and Adenoids... the ENT trifecta!
When we were heading into the recovery area we could hear Max screeching/moaning. It was heartbreaking. He was so confused and looking around, but was so disoriented he couldn't really see us. I sat in the recliner and the nurse handed him to me. He calmed right down. Every so often he would wake up a little and start blabbering incoherent gibberish which we soon realized was "No pokey lady." After an hour Max perked up a little and started making sense. Over the next few hours Max ate popsicles, drank juice, and watched movies. He was enthralled with his 'glowy thumb' (oximeter) and told us that the reason his wrist was all wrapped up was so that it wouldn't fall off. (what?!) I asked him what he would like to wear home, to which he responded "My special surgery jammies and comfy socks." Yes - the exact clothes that we had to beg him to change into. He finally settled on his firetruck jammies. :-)
Max's first popsicle of the day... orange, no surprise.
Max, trying to give a thumbs up... unsuccessfully. Morphine induced fun.
Max passed out on the ride home. We anticipated that today would be filled with Disney movies, popsicles, and napping. Well, we were correct about the popsicles. Max wanted to play, play, play. Bouncing off the walls. How are we supposed to keep him on the DL for ten days if we can't do it on day #1?! Tomorrow should be interesting!
Happy Max thinks it's pretty cool he gets to sleep in Mommy and Daddy's bed.
